Daiquiri
The Daiquiri was supposedly invented by Jennings Cox, an American mining
engineer who was in Cuba in the late 1800s. The fact that there is a mine
and beach of the same name near Santiago, Cuba lends credence to this claim.
In 1909 Admiral Lucius Johnson brought the drink from Cuba to the Army &
Navy Club in Washington DC. It's popularity exploded in the 1940s when
wartime conditions led to a shortage of whisky and other spirits, but rum
was still readily available from the Caribbean.
