Tom Collins
The Tom Collins was first published in 1876 by Jerry
Thomas in his "Bartender's Guide."
The name came from the Great Tom Collins Hoax of 1874, where people in
various parts of the United States (it is believed to have originated in New
York) would ask others if they'd heard that "Tom Collins" had been
slandering them. They were often told Tom Collins was in the local bar,
where they would rush to confront the non-existent Collins. It's not much of
a leap of logic that some New York bartender, having been asked for Tom
Collins over and over, would come up with a drink of that name.
